Hierarchy and layout

This semester I will be given 3 briefs on type and typography.
Brief one: Hierarchy and Layout
Brief two: Magazine design
Brief three: Responsive digital content design

Research

'The main purpose of typography hierarchy is to arrange text to highlight the importance of information. Without a typographic hierarchy, every letter, every word, and sentence in a design would look the same.'
In this brief, I will produce three different typographic layouts. Each layout must be presented differently and must be in black and white. Each poster must be in A3, only use one or two fonts per poster, and be sketched out first. You can use a variation of tone but it's not a necessity. Typographic information only means NO images or shapes.
Due date: 14th October

Starter plans / ideas:

I first looked at different layouts I could use, and after that, I moved onto adding more detail such as titles and showing where text would go.
I did a couple of digital designs as starter ideas in bother black and white, to see how the text would be shown in a digital format and how that text could be manipulated to fit a design.
Issues with these designs include the alignment, spacing between different text areas, and using whitespace, which is disproportionate to the text. They are also not very visually interesting, and although there is a clear image of hierarchy, nothing catches your eye.

Going back to paper

After experimenting with Illustrator and InDesign I decided to go back to making some more thumbnails to further define my ideas.

Font searching

Digital Experimentation

This idea was fun, and I liked the whole idea behind it however, it wasn't executed well. Its very messy and not legible enough.

Another fun idea, and I like the wrapping of the body text around the hierarchy. However, there is a lot of white space and it's not very visually appealing. The 'Things first' at the bottom also stands out too much compared to the other text.

I liked the font I picked out; I think it worked well for this design as it stands out more than the other font.  I do, however, think there is still a lot of white space in all of these, which cannot be helped to a certain extent because of the brief information, but in some of these edits, it does balance out quite nicely.
Feedback
I had a feedback session with Damon, which showed me that my research didn't reflect in my final work. To proceed, I will pick a particular bit of research I find the most visually interesting and modify it to make it my own piece.

These are the images I chose to take inspiration from.
I cannot use shapes for this particular brief, so to work around that I would edit the letters themselves instead.
I also turned all these images greyscale so my mind wouldn't get clouded with colours.
Poster one:
I loved how this one turned out, and using the letters as shapes really works.
The body text is nicely placed but could be more legible, perhaps could use a different font that is less bold.

Poster two:
I also loved how this one turned out. Using greyscale helps a lot, but it is very boxy in places. I do like the area of he body text, it flows quite nicely.
